Dress and Grooming
The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
- Students will wear clean clothing and keep themselves neat, modestly dressed, well groomed and free of offensive body odor.
- The District will not allow pictures, emblems, or writing on clothing that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, unpatriotic, cult-related, sexually suggestive or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other prohibited substance. This includes all gang-related/suggested attire including bandannas.
- If a student has tattoos, they must be covered at all times.
- Hair should be kept clean and well groomed. Hair may not be colored in an unnatural color (red, blue, etc.). Hair will be checked on a regular basis for lice, etc. Infested students will be sent home. Male student’s hair must be clean, out of the eyes and not to exceed the bottom of the ear on the sides and not to exceed the bottom of the dress shirt collar. Male students are to be clean-shaven with no facial hair. Beards and/or mustaches are not allowed. Sideburns shall be no longer than the bottom of the ear and no wider than 1½ inch. Hairstyles or designs that are disruptive or distractive to the school environment are prohibited (i.e. Mohawks, rattails, dreadlocks, patterns or shavings in the hair or spikes), except for school-approved special events. Symbols and/or numbers may not be cut or shaved into the hair. Hair will be checked by the 1st period teacher for compliance with dress code rules. If the hair is not in compliance, the teacher will issue a warning and make an attempt to contact the parent. If the hair is not cut within 2 days, the student will be placed in ISS. Continued refusal after 2 days will result in suspension and further consequences that are in the Student Code of Conduct for refusal to comply with directives given. Facial hair will be checked by the 1st period teacher for compliance with dress code rules. If the facial hair is not in compliance, the teacher will issue a dress code violation and the student will report to the office immediately. 1st offense a student will be allowed to contact a parent to come to the school and correct the dress code violation or the student will be placed in ISS. 2nd offense and beyond, the student will be placed in ISS for violating the Student Code of Conduct.
- Appropriate footwear must be worn on campus at all times. House slippers, bedroom slippers, shoes with rollers or skating inserts, shoes with cleats, steel-toed combat boots, altered or gang-related shoes are prohibited. All laced shoes must be tied. Shoes appropriate for PE activities are advised.
- Hats, caps, beanies, hoodies, and sweatbands are not to be worn inside the building. Gloves are not permitted to be worn in the building. Keep these items out of visible sight or they will be confiscated and parents can claim the item in the office or returned to the student at the end of the school year.
- Tops must be worn that cover the entire torso, even with arms raised above the head. Top must not have a low revealing -neck line or be backless. Armhole size on shirts and blouses shall be appropriate and not revealing. All boys’ shirts must have sleeves. Oversized shirts (hand past hips), tube, tank, halter blouses with small straps, and see-through tops are not permitted. Strapless shirts are not allowed and sleeveless shirts must be at least four inches wide or cover the space from the base of the neck to the top of the shoulder (girls only).
- Garments should be appropriate for school; therefore, too tight or too short garments are not acceptable. The length of skirts, dresses, shorts, etc. must allow one to walk, stoop, kneel, and sit with modesty. They can be no shorter than two and a half inches above the knee when standing with or without leggings. Walking shorts are permissible. Cut-off, bathing suits, biker shorts, wind shorts, running or skin-tight garments are not permitted. All garments must also be worn at the waist. Low-rise apparel is not allowed. Overalls must have their straps worn over the shoulder and must be fastened.
- Oversized shirts (hand past hips) or overly baggy pants or shorts are not allowed. This includes trench coats.
- Students may not wear boxers, PJ’s or other bed clothing as outerwear.
- Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times.
- Girls may pierce ears only. Boys may not wear earrings. Students may not wear studs, nose rings, strings, or band aids to cover any piercing. No body piercing or bar piercing is allowed. Students are not permitted to gauge/plug ears.
- No sunglasses (unless lightly tinted prescription) may be worn in the building.
- Any noise making or distracting articles will not be allowed.
- No wallet chains are permitted.
- Belts must be worn in belt loops.
- Clothing which has been punctured, torn, shredded, (i.e. holes in your pants – are not permitted) written on or which as a result of wear and tear has been rendered unkempt in appearance is prohibited.
- Blankets and pillows are not permitted at school - excluding athletic or school sponsored trips.
The campus principal, in connection with the teacher, sponsor, coach, or other person in charge of an instructional or extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Such additional standards shall be written and copies given to the students and parents.
The administration shall make the final ruling regarding conformity to the dress code. Any questions to whether an item may or may not conform should be addressed to the school PRIOR to wearing of the article. This can save time for the parents and students.
If the principal determines that a student’s grooming violates the dress code, the following procedure will be followed:
1st Offense (Per semester): Student will be sent to the office where the problem will be corrected at that time or the student will be placed in ISS until the problem is corrected.
2nd Offense and beyond (Per semester): Student will be sent to the office and immediate ISS placement or the student is suspended from school for the remainder of the school day. No opportunities to change will be allowed.
The enforcement of the above policy will be shared by the entire school staff.
